♨️ Kyoto City Public Bath Tour ♨️ (Visiting local public baths) Ryugu Onsen (1054 Chikaracho, Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City) My wife and I visited on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 3:00 PM when it opened.♨️ Ryugu Onsen is a traditional public bathhouse, listed as number 21 in the 2025 Kyoto Public Bath Calendar 🗓️, one of the 22 Best Hot Springs in and around Kyoto.😇 The bathing fee for Kyoto public baths increased to 550 yen on April 1st of this year (Reiwa 7), but I still think it's on the cheaper side in the Kansai area.☺️ This is a front-type bathhouse. You pay the fee, and the men's bath is on the left and the women's bath is on the right.🫣 In the changing room, you pick up a basket, undress, and then put your clothes in the basket. I put it in the locker, put the basket in the locker, and lock it. 🔐 When you enter the bathroom (for men), the washing area is on the left. From the front right is the medicinal bath (a blend of Szechuanxiong powder and Angelica sinensis powder). The water is purple-brown in color and not too hot, so you can soak for a long time. 😮💨 Next, there's a hot bath (deep) and a small fountain, and on the right there are two electric baths about half a tatami mat in size ⚡️, followed by a jacuzzi bath (milky). 😀 There's a cold bath 🥶 at the back front, and an infrared sauna (it feels about 92 degrees to me). There's a basket of mats at the entrance, so please use them. 😊 And! There's also another steam sauna here! 👍 There's a faucet and a bucket inside the steam sauna, and you're only allowed to use them to rinse the seat. Hygiene is very strict! 👌 Also, hair dryers are free to use, but please use them sparingly. 😞 I only spent an hour and a half in the bath, but I warmed up thoroughly and headed home feeling warm and cozy. 🚋 Thank you for today! 🙏

I love onsen, I love sauna, I love the peace it puts into my soul. On my business trip to Japan I took a couple of relax days out of a busy schedule and I spent them in Kyoto. I am very glad I did. In the neighborhood where I stayed I found Ryugu Onsen and it was just what the doctor ordered. Yes, the water is hot, the sauna is hot, the plunge is cold, exactly what you would hope to find. The highlight for me though was the immersion into a historical spa experience, one that is brutally local. For many decades patrons have come here and enjoyed it the exact same way, worn the same surfaces, using identical rituals. Check out the key to the locker. So, take time and watch how the regulars do this, you'll come away with a deeper appreciation of traditional onsen culture. Even though I clearly stood out as different, people were nothing but kind. They shifted a little to the side with a subtle smile, and made room for a new face. Full stars for the experience, without the slightest hesitation

We had a great time at Ryugu Onsen for only 430¥, everything included. There is a large variety of bathes (cold, hot, bubble-bath, electrified and medicinal) as well as a sauna and a hammam, making it more a sento than an onsen. The people there gave us advices on how to wash ourselves in the right way and how to use the bathes. Another good thing for our first public bath experience was the fact that there was very few people (max 8 in the men section and 5 in the women section).If you need you can buy towels and shampoo.

I felt that I wasn't welcome, the customers (especially older ones) seem racist and mean to outsiders, the place was in much worse and dirtier condition than the picture shows and if you happen to choose this spa, bring your own towel and detergents, the towel for rent is a hand towel....

Super cool local place, not fancy. Not much English, so read up before hand. Very clean. Gender separated. Around ¥500? BEWARE the electric section in the corner of hot water section. Hot, cold, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room.
