Genshichi Roten no yu Zao Onsen

I went to this bathhouse last month and had a very poor experience at all levels. First, there was no limit as to the number of clients who could enter the bath at the same time. As a consequence, the place was crowded and noisy, so it was impossible to relax. Second, the shower and changing area was way too small. When it was time for me to leave, I had to queue, standing naked, for 20 minutes before a shower finally got free (there are only 3). Third, the amenities were very basic. The body soap and shampoo bottles were empty. There was only one mirror, one hairdryer and one toilet. I had to wait another 10 minutes to be able to dry my hair. Last, I witnessed a very awkward moment between the owner of the bathhouse and a young lady. The manager was asking her to pay 20000 JPY because she had parked her vehicle for a longer period than her bathing time. I understand that the behaviour of the client may not have been correct, but the way the manager raised his voice and threatened to call the police if she was not paying the money was very rude and brutal. I almost intervened. When I left, I noticed they had around 50 parking places, half of which were empty. No rules were displayed as to the use of the parking. I will not go back there.

A great bathhouse with natural springs! I’ve visited in the summer and winter and both times the outdoor bath was beautiful. Foreigners are welcome! Buy a ticket from the machine up front. Bring your own towel, as the towels available for purchase are quite small. There are lockers for small valuables in the lobby, and plenty of baskets in the changing area. There are standing showers and soap and shampoo, and hair dryers. The actual onsen consists of a very warm indoor bath (fantastic after a cold day of skiing) and an outdoor sulfur spring. Although this place is slightly pricier than other options, I find it to be worth it.

I was told tattoos are okay, at least for foreigners I went early in the morning, 11am There’s two large outdoor baths, and one relatively big indoor bath. the water is not very hot outdoors, but inside it’s good. Some of the areas are a bit ‘outdated’ but personally I prefer it that way. One thing I didn’t really like was the shower stalls, everything is beautifully wooden and then there’s late 80’s plastic/aluminium ‘modern’ stalls I don’t mind the stalls per se, but the choice is questionable, needs some work.

Reasonably priced and Very nice outdoor hot spring but showers are very basic, with small changing areas. ¥600 entry price. especially during winter surrounded by snow the hot spring is beautiful. There are also available pudding at the entrance. You buy the ticket at a vending machine. You have to bring your own tower if not need to buy. Be aware to always bath before getting in the hot spring. The bath inside feels a LOT hotter than the one outside.

lovely old onsen high up on mountain. Good outdoor bath with snowy view but a little cool for me at 39C. Indoor pool hotter and better at 41C. Offers stand-up showers with curtain for private washing - first time I’ve seen this. Tattoos seem ok - a man with full body tattoos came in with his two kids and no issues.
