Gohoso

I first discovered this hotel when I happened to drive by the area last year and thought it looked very nice. I was happy that I finally had the chance to stay here as a rest stop before continuing my drive to Yamagata. I stayed for one night with a late-arrival package, which included breakfast but not dinner. The staff were very kind and helpful, even with my limited Japanese. The public onsen was one of the nicest I’ve experienced in Japan, with a beautiful view of the Japanese garden. The outdoor bath was perfect on a cool evening, and both times I visited (the onsen) I chose to relax only in the open-air bath. The room was very clean and the shared spaces were well maintained. I also appreciated that the breakfast area, even though located in the main hall, was arranged to give a sense of privacy. I had a very restful stay and look forward to coming back again, hopefully for a longer visit next time. :)

I stayed here using a hometown tax return gift. I had originally planned to drive and stop off in Nasu, but the scorching heat of the past few days meant I took the train. I took a local bus from Shin-Shirakawa Station and arrived in the mountains, expecting it to be an old hot spring inn, but I was amazed by the exterior! Each room has a balcony, and it's as beautiful as a castle. There were small flower arrangements in the room, and the pebbles in the outdoor bath garden were decorated with wave patterns, making it look like a dry landscape garden! The hot spring water is neutral in taste and odor, and very warming. The view from Kajika no Yu blew away my daily fatigue. The rest area after my bath was also very relaxing. Tohoku is home to many unique hot springs, but the hospitality here is exceptional. It's an inn I'd like to return to.

I visited for the first time for a day trip. I knew this was a long-established inn that prided itself on its food and baths, so the open-air bath was great. However, I guess day-trippers aren't welcome, as I was forced to write down my address, name, and phone number at the reception. It was a bit of a surprise since it was my first time at a hot spring like that, and the receptionist's brusque and condescending attitude also annoyed me a bit. Even while I was bathing, inn staff came into the bathroom and stared at me, which made me feel really uncomfortable. I wondered if they were up to some bad behavior. I had heard from a friend in Tochigi that it was a great place, so I was quite disappointed. A truly long-established, famous inn doesn't discriminate between overnight guests and day-trippers.

I stayed for one night with two meals included. I was greeted at the entrance and check-in was smooth. The large public bath was spacious, and the open-air bath was beautiful with greenery, which was visually soothing. I was told that the water is changed and cleaned daily, so it was clean and the spring quality was excellent. After my morning bath, I opened the window and gazed outside, and the green trees, the sound of the flowing river, and the rustling breeze were all very pleasant. The meals were delicious, both in the morning and at night. The staff were all very welcoming and I had a comfortable stay. It seems that it snows in winter, so I would like to visit in the spring next time. I will definitely stay with you again.

Because it's quite inconvenient, it was pretty empty. But there were a lot of people there, likely for the purpose of taking a therapeutic bath. All the lunch dishes were mostly fish. Even though we're in the mountains? Lunch was all ours. We arrived at the hot spring too early, so the open-air bath was still being prepared and only about 70% full.
