Hōheikyō Hot Spring

To be honest, this was the worst onsen I visited during my trip around Hokkaido. It’s advertised as having one of the largest outdoor baths in Japan, but in reality it felt quite small. The facilities are very old-fashioned, which does give it some charm, but the men’s change room was cramped and uncomfortable. On the men’s side there was only one indoor bath and one outdoor bath, which felt limited given how popular the place is. It was extremely busy when I visited. The outdoor bath was crowded, with many people chatting loudly and drinking beer, which detracted from any sense of relaxation. There were also quite a lot of people with tattoos, which may or may not bother some visitors. The service also felt below standard. After purchasing tickets, there was no staff member at the entrance to direct us, collect the tickets, or provide towels. Towels are not included in the entrance fee and must be purchased separately, which felt disappointing given the price and the popularity of the onsen. The main redeeming feature is the Indian restaurant downstairs — the naan bread was genuinely excellent and one of the highlights of the visit. I would only consider returning on a very quiet day. Otherwise, the onsen feels too small and crowded to be enjoyable.

great place! the outdoor onsen was extremely nice and relaxing. a little dirty maybe, but not bad at all. if you dont want to spend extra, then bring your own towel. if not, you have to buy one- there are no towels to rent. the scenery is amazing tho! a bit hard to get to, so if you are nervous about transportation, i reccommend reserving the Joetsu Kappa Liner (じょうてつ, かっぱライナー) bus online. its about ¥2,000 round trip, and you can pick the drop off and pick up location and time from sapporo. you can use public transportation too, but if you want peace of mind, Kappa liner is good.

A great place for onsen and food! 🚨NO Tattoo restrictions! 😍 Payed around 1300 yen (7 euro ish) per person for the onsen wich was great! Really cozy spot and very friendly staff. Don’t know if you could book a mixed man/woman onsen privately, so we did separate ones. Then we had dinner there, Indian food wich was also really good! We got soo much food and nan! Payed around 30 euro for full dinner for 4 people including drinks. And my vegetarian friend says she loved the food so that’s a plus. Would highly recommend!! Very friendly staff 😍

Took a Jotetsu Bus 7H to/fro Susukino bus stop and went directly to Hoheikyo onsen. The journey was pretty smooth. The onsen is a highly recommended place to go if you are in Sapporo. Especially during winter ..u can feel the snow and the warm onsen feeling. After onsen, the restaurant is famous for its indian curry with the crispy delicious Naan! Must try! Please prepare two 100 JPY coins because you need to place ur belongings in the locker and the coins is returnable!

Super traditional style hot spring. Huge outdoor bath with nice views of the surrounding forest. Everything in English. There's also an Indian restaurant with Indian curries and very good naan. Curry flavor is average but it's also cheaper than an average bowl of ramen. Arrived as they opened at 10am on a Thursday and it was quiet, but by 11am very busy. Restaurant was also bust at 11:30am
