Hokkawa Onsen

A small and very simple open air bath right against the sea. Waves are visible from the back of the bath, and islands on a clear day. On really rainy days the sound of the rain mixes with crashing waves and it's beautiful. In both 2023 and 2024 there was no mixed bath as older reviews say. The men's side has two pools, with big rocks surrounding them. The women have only one pool. The men's side is visible from the sidewalk along the seawall and from many apartments and even the train station, but you'd need a strong zoom. Bathroom and towels are at the convenience store in town.

Very public onsen. You may let people saw when you’re naked but it very enjoying while soak in the onsen hearing the wave from the sea and facing the sea. That was really enjoyable!! If you staying in Caren group hotel, this onsen is complimentary. There is no changing room over there and no towel provided just easy going onsen. Take off you clothes put in the basket and then using a pipe to fill up the water from the bowl and make a quick shower before entering. If you’re ok to soak in public and people might saw you, you can go for it really enjoy with the view.

Another hidden gem: a mesmerizing onsen right by the shore. Waves crash against the rocks and occasional splashes reach you, feels amazing. Entry is 600 yen. No showers, just the onsen; you rinse with onsen water before entering. Simplicity. A short walk away, there’s a Japanese restaurant serving local fish. Pretty fantastic experience to see the clouds drift by, watch and listen to the waves crash on the rocks. For ¥600 I would argue this is the hot spring experience at its most uncomplicated and relaxing. Parking across the street, you can rent a towel for ¥200, wash yourself off before getting in and enjoy! Gentleman left before I got in and had place entirely to myself the whole time

It looked roomy in the photo but it was in fact about 4.5m2 round onsen tub and nothing else. Space right behind the tub is just enough for two people to squat down and pour water with a bucket to wash off dust. Stinks like pee near the water knob when you squat down.. The view is great though there was a bit more distance between the tub and the water than my expectation.
