Japan’s secret hot spring destination: “Nagato Yumoto” in Yamaguchi Prefecture, a hot spring town forgotten by time With a history of about 600 years, Nagato Yumoto Onsen is the oldest hot spring town in Yamaguchi Prefecture. This hot spring town launched a local regeneration project in 2017, re-planning the landscape along the Yinxin River and introducing unique shops, injecting new life into the ancient hot spring street. The success of the renovation project not only won the town recognition from the 2020 Japan Regional Creation Awards, but also ranked among the top 30 of Japan's Top 100 Hot Springs in 2023

We found a hidden germ on the way to Motonosumi Inari Shrine. With a history of over 600 years, Nagato Yumoto Onsen is the oldest hot spring in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Traditional ryokan inns, restaurants, and cafés renovated from old houses line the banks of the Otozure River, which flows through the heart of this quaint hot spring village. The whole town of Nagato Yumoto Onsen underwent a significant renewal and, in the spring of 2020, was remade into a hot spring town perfect for relaxing strolls.

I love the atmosphere of this hot spring town. I had decided to have lunch at Sakura Shokudo, but it was closed. This is actually the second time I've been rejected. It seems like we're never meant to meet again, but I'll come back someday.

This place is cool, but not much shops/restaurants nearby. Closest convenient store is 5mins drive. There’s a local small store though

Strolling along the river, soaking your feet in a footbath, or enjoying tea at a cafe – it's a scene unique to a hot spring town.
