Kojigoku Onsen

My favourite onsen on my trip (out of three I visited) and I think totally worth the trip out here. Already the setting in woodland is lovely, and the onsen is small and rustic-looking. Segregated, small and friendly. Visited on a Saturday afternoon but did not find it too busy. There are two indoor baths for women, one hot, one super hot (42-43C). The interior is lovely, with a lot of natural stone and wood, as usual, it is super clean. And the water smells strongly of sulphur and is milky and I felt my sore back was really relaxing after just one session in those baths. Frankly, I love sulphur baths but remember to take your jewellery off or have it discoloured.
Very nice onsen with milky water that comes directly from the Jigokudani behind it, which can be seen from the communal meeting area and the onsen itself. Definitely worth the 15 minute walk the center of Unzen Onsen tourist info. 500 yen entry fee. The bus to Shimabara leaves directly in front of the Onsen. Friendly staff. Bonus cat guard. Bring your own towel or buy one here.
A nice onsen located in unzen onsen area. The water is quite hot for me so i need to enter the bath slowly. The steam is too much so that i can’t see properly. I went here by foot from the nearest bus stop, i wouldn’t recommend coming here in the evening by foot as the path going here is quite isolated and quiet.
Possibly the best day visit hotspring in Unzen. The water is milky white from the minerals. There is a family area for relaxing after the dip. This place is a 20 minute walk from the main Unzen town centre. You can walk on the road or through a scenic path through the forest.
Considered how small and rudimentary most public Onsens are in Unzen this is one of the best options, still relatively small but they have two pools one hotter and one less hot (probably around 41 degrees?), plenty of stools and sitting shower spots.

Make a day of it — a quick-dry towel, dry bag, and post-soak layers take almost no pack space.
