Onagawa Onsen Yupo'po

This hot spring facility is located on the second floor of Onagawa Station in Onagawa Town. A hot spring inside a JR station is quite rare, even nationwide. I heard that before the earthquake, it operated in a small facility next to the old station building. You leave your shoe keys at the front desk and receive a locker key in return, similar to a health spa. The hot springs are available in two types: an indoor natural hot spring and lukewarm water. The natural hot spring has a subtle sodium scent and is so clear that it's hard to tell at first glance that it's a hot spring, but after just five minutes in the water, you'll warm up and feel very comfortable. It was also a favorite hot spring of a friend of mine who used to live in Onagawa. The rest area is on the second floor. Apparently, from the second-floor corridor overlooking the shopping district in front of Onagawa Station, you can see a beautiful and spectacular sunrise on New Year's Day. The shop on the first floor sells whale meat and other items. I've traveled around Tohoku for over 10 years, and this place in Onagawa holds many memories for me, having frequently visited it.

We went there for a day trip to the hot springs. It's attached to JR Onagawa Station and makes up the majority of the facilities. The reception, souvenir shop, and gallery are on the first floor, with relaxing chairs on the staircase, and the tatami rest area and bath area are on the second floor. For 500 yen, shampoo and body soap are provided, there are 10 seats in the washing area, and two indoor baths (a large one with hot spring water and a small one with tap water). The water is clear and slightly thick. It has excellent heat retention. I was able to relax in the rest area while still staying warm.

A very convenient Onsen located in the same building with Onagawa Station. We came here after strolling around Onagawa in winter. Very clean place and hard to miss. Usage fee is 500 yen for adults (children can use the Onsen too). Note that you should bring your own towels. Pay in the first floor (the staff will show the ticket machine for the Onsen) and you will be directed to the second floor. There is a lounge area in the second floor to take a break after enjoying the Onsen. There is also a sitting area in the first floor, where you can also find massage chairs, snacks, drinks, and souvenirs.

It's great that you can take a bath in the hot spring for 700 yen (including the cost of renting a bath towel) while waiting for a train or check-in. You can see the ocean from the rooftop, but it's closer, so it's better to go down to the sea.

The place is super beautiful, the building too. I recomend to go to the onsen, it is very nice and relaxing. Very interesting also for the people interested in the iniciatives after the tsunami of 2011
