Free local hot spring housed in a traditional wooden building. Even though the water was too hot for anyone but the locals, it was worth it just to see the architecture with its high ceiling from the inside. This hot spring has a drain and cool water faucets around the main tub, so you can bring your soap and shampoo and wash yourself off before you get in. MAKE SURE to do this off to the side so that you don't get splash any soap into the tub. Some other rules to remember, take your boots off when you enter, don't go in with your towel, don't put your hair in the bath, don't sit on the wooden edge of the bath and make sure to wash yourself off well before you get in.

It's my first experience at an onsen. So I had the best experience at Nakao onsen. Water temperature was really hot but it's best to bath at the end of the day to feel refreshed. It's free!!!! Things to carry: Towel Body wash Hair shampoo and conditioner Things to do: You need to remove your shoes before entering the dry area. Completely undress yourself(naked) Keep your things at the rack provided Take your towel and other bathing things near the onsen Clean yourself first and also to let your body adjust the hot temperature. Then slowly get into the onsen and enjoy for about 15min is good enough!!

Nice clean onsen but my god it was hot. This was my first onsen in nozawa (besides accomodation) and I didnt go to others after this one lol. I read so many recommended Views saying there was a cooler side, but the day I went, both sides were sooo hot - i feel im usually ok with heat but maybe I am wrong haha. I wonder if sometimes people add cold water and they didnt this day or something 🤷♀️ I lasted about maybe 10-20mins but it also took me a while to get in. I wondered if this level of heat is actually good for our skin ? Worth a try but defs scared me off a bit.

Very nice small public onsen with very hot water. The price is free of charge. A local lady told me the trick to slowly get used to the hot water is to use the bowls provided and first mix the hot onsen water with the cold tap water and pour it over yourself until you gwt used to it, then pour some cold water from the tap in the onsen tub.

Free! And very hot water! If you are not used to it, just sit on the floor, use the bucket to get the water from the tub and slowly wash yourself. Do that for 15 mins then you will be ready to get into the tub. After that wash again with icy cold water from the tap, similar to doing cold plunge post sauna - best feeling! :)

Gear up

Primitive springs don’t come with towels. A quick-dry towel, water shoes, and a headlamp for the walk back all pack small.
