Nagan Eupseong Folk Village

We have been here numerous times and this time it was for the Folk Culture Festival. It was full but not overly crowded. There are traditional games, traditional performance and culture experiences. If you have been to Jeonju you might find this one exciting as well because it is more traditional. People still live in the houses so dont go in if the gates are closed. Open houses are usually for experience programs. You can go up the fortress and look at the village from above. Not so recommended if you bring a stroller or with an elderly cos the stone steps can be steep and uneven. Other than the fortress climb, the path is flat and easy. There are restaurants inside and on ordinary days you can eat there but unless you come early during the festival days, you have to wait at least an hour. We had lunch at one of the setup food tents nearby. Price was much cheaper and I would say quite tasty and you can find a seat easily. Spacious parking, affordable ticket price. Free if you are more than 65, under 7, have disability card. We had the fee 50% discount today, probably because of the festival. Overall is a good place to see what traditional life is about, especially for children.

It’s a 600 year old+ fortress village of Korean traditional straw houses (think cute hobbit homes). We went in winter when there were no experiences opened and no stores opened except for halmuni selling rice cake. But we still enjoyed it and I highly recommend it. We spent a few hours here. Start by walking up along the fortress walls (careful if u have kids) and then walk downstairs. We had a fabulous time and while there are tons of one star reviews- I would ignore them. People complaining about 4000 won entry fee…. While you cannot enter the homes, it is still fascinating to see and walk around. We saw fields of cotton trees with cotton buds still attached, cabbage gardens, straw roof thatching piles- it was great! Some reviewers said it was trashy- some yards are cluttered but these people live in a small hut, what do you expect. Some are very very old as well such as the halmuni selling rice cake in the dead of winter. Beautiful photos, and honestly it’s just a really cute and charming place. Loved it and would highly recommend.

Great unique experience made even better by visiting on a winter sunny, clear day with very few people around. There is no other folk village like this in Korea. The walled perimeter (which offer amazing views if you complete the circular walk), straw roofs and clay rooms makes it unique but what I found most interesting is that people still live there. It is like an open air museum where you can experience what life was a few hundred years ago mixed with a few modern aspects. Had lunch in the restaurant inside the village - not fancy, just simple food served with kindness. It was one of the best pancakes I had in Korea.

It has been a while since I last visited Naganeupseong, but it is still great. It is perfect for a quiet stroll around the village, and it is also great for children to run around and play. With traditional folk games, swings, and food options available, I think you can have a wonderful time with family, friends, or anyone else.

If you are doing a road trip and in the neighborhood, definitely make your way here! It is kind of in the middle of nowhere so it might be difficult to reach if you don't have a car. This is a gorgeous traditional village and you can spend a few hours walking around here. It was also a film set for some Korean drama movies.
