Surya Spa
Update: No one has reached out to me about my experience which is another sting. I’m writing this review to give an honest, unsponsored opinion, because I really wish someone had been more upfront before we booked. My boyfriend and I just had a four-hand massage that cost over $850, and it simply was not good, didn't feel luxurious, it didn't even feel like a massage — not even close to worth the price. The more I think about it the more outrageous it feels There was no real massage technique. It was labeled “light pressure,” but there was basically no pressure at all. I asked for more pressure during the session, but nothing changed. It felt more like reiki than massage, and I left feeling totally unsatisfied. I’ve had $60 Thai massages that were far more effective and equally relaxing. We actually booked another massage later tonight because my back still hurt. Also strange; they told me they would massage above the breast area, but in reality, they were going all around the breasts without ANY covering while lying on your back, even when they weren't massaging your chest area at all which I thought was strange to be exposed like that for no reason... that should have been communicated more clearly — it felt a bit unprofessional. The worst part was after the massage, we had to figure out the shower ourselves. No one turned it on for us, and it had a complicated three-lever system. I couldn’t figure out how to turn the water warm, so ended up taking freezing showers. The bottles weren’t labeled, so I had no idea what was shampoo, conditioner, or body wash — and no face wash to clean off all the oil. It's simple things like that that you would expect in a luxury massage that's close to $1000 The staff was very kind, and this isn’t about them personally, but whoever designed this experience really missed the mark. Just having two people doesn’t justify that price, especially when the quality is so low. You can get a way better massage elsewhere for a fraction of the cost.
I want to start by saying my massage therapist was one of the best I've had and I've had a lot of massage. She combined Neuro muscular with stretching and deep tissue and it was perfection! She checked in during the massage on pressure and temperature. She focused on exactly what I asked. She was truly fabulous. I gave three stars because of the facility and reception welcome. Basically, there is not facilities by way of steam, sauna or whirlpool. There is no changing into a robe, you just go straight into a waiting room and then to the massage room. I was very casually greeted at reception and told to go wait in a very lack luster meditation room. The meditation room is not clean. Oil on walls and stains on dirty couches. The setup is not advantageous either. The massage rooms are in another part of the building and you have to go outside (it was windy and cold) to get to them. When you get into the treatment room, you have to change in a bathroom. It's not comfortable or cozy. Also, a lot of oil is used but at the end of the service, it would have been nice to have my hands and feet wiped with a warm towel so it wasn't slippery. I would also suggest a better greeting when a client arrives. Maybe a warm or cool oshi bori or washing of the feet. There are lots of ways to enhance and welcome/departure of your guests. This was an okay day spa experience. Nothing elaborate and over the top. The therapist does warrant 5 stars though. She was incredible.
This is a review for their operations and front of house, as the masseuses Veronica and her daughter Natalie were lovely and I wish I could go back to see them if not for the terrible customer service from Samantha and her junior employee whose name I don’t recall. The front of house / customer service was awful, ill informed, and condescending. They also last minute canceled my appointment and rebooked me for a later date so I had to accommodate my schedule based on their poor planning. Samantha was especially rude. Her junior employee was just young and inexperienced but also completely unhelpful. I wasted an hour of my time after the massage bc the check out experience was so mismanaged. I could share the verbatim passive aggressive words Samantha shared but I believe there is another reviewer that mentioned a similar condescending tone from who I can only imagine is Samantha. The masseuses Natalie and Veronica were lovely - I wish I could return to them but the operations at this place made me feel like I was at the DMV rather than a premium spa experience. Left the appointment stressed instead of relaxed and rejuvenated.
I drove a long way for my appointment and took the day off for some much needed self-care. The receptionist could not have been more incompetent and condescending. She made it all be “my” fault because she was unable to approach the problem cooperatively. She said that my appointment was for another day even though I know when my travel dates were to Santa Monica. No real apology. Lost day of work. Stressful drive. All I was offered was a loaf of stale bread. .. and a lot of, “do you want to rebook?” Unbelievably terrible customer service. I would expect that for the price, you could work with your client to find an amenable solution. Not blame. Ridiculous.
The Surya skincare discovery set might be the greatest gift I've received in a long time. Each product feels well crafted and the packaging is beautiful. As someone with sensitive skin, I was happy to find that these products didn't cause any breakouts or irritation. Also, the Kansa wand is unlike any gua sha or face roller I’ve used in the past. It leaves my skin feeling lifted and rejuvenated. I definitely recommend this skincare set to anyone looking to elevate their skincare routine!
